Downtime Improvement

Article by Dr Larry Callaway

Limited twilight golf, less late afternoon tee times, colder and wetter weather conditions, and many other distractions to the golf game come around this time of year.  We just passed Halloween, I did not see any golfer outfits, but I do know that once Halloween ends it is time to gear up for the rest of the holidays.

With less time on the green it is still possible to take it up a notch or two.  Imagine coming back to the course next year with 10 or more yards on your drive, more consistency in your swing biomechanics, less chance for injury, and a greater chance to drop your handicap.

The Top Things you should be doing this off season:

  • Careful of what you eat: you don’t want to pack on the pounds and have to work to get around that extra mid section.
  • Minutes a day keeps the ball in play: take a few moments in the morning and/or evening to take out a club and take some gentle swings
  • Balance: there is more standing and sitting around this time of the year.  Make the best use of your time stand closer to a wall or couch and balance on one foot for 10 to 15 seconds keep alternating back and forth.  It may look weird but strokes off the score next season will not.
  • POWER: the off season is the best time to improve your power.  This is an important time to work with someone who knows how to effectively tailor a plan for you to improve your power.

If you can do this few simple things…it is my belief and confidence that your game will improve and you will maintain a healthier life.
