Playing golf shots from the deep rough requires some technique. Many golfers will tend to struggle from the deep rough because they are not sure what adjustments need to be made to pull the shot off. The trick to hitting out of the deep rough is managing to get as little rough between your club and the ball as possible. Taking a normal swing will cause you to hit way to much grass before the golf ball. Using the right club, stance and grip are key to making the shot. Follow these tips and you will get yourself out of jail and back into play!
* Line the shot up to aim slightly to the right of your target. This is because you will need to make a steeper swing than normal which is a shot that will tend to pull left of your intended target. Use the sand wedge or another wedge to make the best contact with the ball. This is if you have a very bad lie and the ball is way down in the rough. In this case you are just trying to get the ball out of the rough and back into the fairway. Take your licks! To many times golfers make the mistake of trying to pull along iron or even a wood and bash it on the green. If some of the ball is showing on top of the rough, try using a hybrid or longer iron and only if the ball is showing or sitting on top of the rough a little.
* Increase the pressure on the club. You will be hitting through a good bit of deep grass to get to the ball. You will need a firm grip to get throught the grass as it will try and grab the club and slow it down. Grip with the last three fingers of your hand. This should help stabilize the club face as it comes in contact with the rough.
* Place the ball about two inches back from the center of your stance. Put the majority of your weight on your front foot and flex that knee more than usual to get lower to the ball. This will help you make a sharp downward stike on the golf ball catching the least amount of grass as possible.
* Start your swing and cock your wrists quickly. This helps promote a sharp strike on the descent of your swing. Make a strong swing through the ball and make sure to finish your swing after contact. Remember that getting it out is the main goal and going for the green is only an option when it is available. Just be patient and be smart when you get in some deep rough or a bad lie. Commit to the shot and execute it.
