I have just embarked on a new adventure. I am going to be taking lessons regularly with a golf amateur that used to be a teaching pro on the other side of the country, who retired his card to compete again. The exchange is fitness and wellness for a better golf game. Sounds like a good deal right…some of my future blogs are going to be my lessons tweaked for you to improve your fitness and wellness, as well as decrease you chance of injury…better yet improve your golf game.

For the first time since I began working with golfers I understand that typical golf injuries occur in the typical golfer…these are injuries that are not seen in the tour, usually!

Lateral Epicondylitis aka tennis elbow.

When an amateur golf such as myself is looking to create power in our swing, when our technique is not perfect, we tend to use the muscles that we have developed through fitness (or lack thereof) . In my case I am strong in my arms so I pull the club through with my left arm creating a chicken wing and club through with my right arm worsening my chicken wing with my left arm.

So lessons for the day:

1) Take lessons if you don’t know what you are doing technique wise.

2) Pair up with a medical professional that deals with golf specific injuries ie a TPI medical practitioner.

3) Team that with a fitness professional who can help your golf goals in the gym or through a fitness routine.

4) DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MAKE CORRECTIONS WHEN YOU ARE FATIGUED!

Left arm has been sore because during my great lesson, I was swinging more than usually and I pushed through and today my arm is sore in the pattern of tennis elbow which is the wrong injury for a golfer due to technique and fatigue.
