Often times in my practice, the specific chiropractic center and hio golf fitness, I am asked “what can I do to prevent osteoporosis/maintain Bone Health?”  The answer that I can give often shocks people because of its simplicity.  I tell my patients they just need to keep moving maintain a good balance diet.

So what does this have to do with golf?  Golf courses range from 5,000 yards to over 7,000 yards, and although most golfers ride a cart, the golf round can last for several hours.  That much walking, standing and getting in and out of golf carts requires movement.  This movement not only requires endurance and stamina but is weight bearing.  When I tell my patients to move I am talking about weight bearing exercises and this is crucial for Bone health. This is fantastic news for bone health inquirers.

Females are typically the patients that ask about bone health.  One of the major physical problems facing post-menopausal women is osteoporosis, a condition that is characterized by a thinning of bone tissue and loss of density overtime which predisposes individuals to fractures.

It has been shown that consistent, weight bearing exercise can stimulate bone tissue.  So even a novice golfer that swings the club more times than they would like, should be happy to know that this is stimulating their bones and keeping them healthier.

According to Titleist Performance Institute “Playing a round of golf two or three times a week can help to supplement a regular exercise program including aerobic activity (walking, swimming, biking, etc.) and light weight workouts, producing improved body image and over all well being.”

So golf is not only a great sport it also has health benefits that keep people playing longer.
