As I watch and teach professionals and amateurs how to improve their game there seems to be a few places for certain where extra yards and more consistent shots come from. One of which is the back swing. The back swing needs to consistent every time. The back swing is often controlled with the arms/club leading the entire swing to be an arm driven swing. This type of swing leads a ton of inconsistencies.
Even looking at a professional golf swing, when there is a poor shot it starts from the backswing. The perfect back swing starts with the arms but is lead by the body. If you graph the swing both by movement and by power they line up almost opposite. The order of movements is hands, shoulders trunk and hips. The order of power is hips and trunk at the top, then shoulders and lastly hands.
So I teach and work heavily on strength of the hips/glutes, trunk/core, and shoulders. I have teaching golf professionals that work heavily on the hands and club portion of the swing.
TOP THREE TO GETTING BACK
1. Diagonal Lifts: With a ball or band start with your hands at your left hip pull or drive the ball/band up and back into the backswing potions USE YOUR BODY to get the last few degrees of rotation.
2. Shoulder External Rotation: standing facing the wall with a band parallel to your shoulder, have your elbow and shoulder at 90 degrees and pull your arm back to make an L or reverse L depending upon which arm you are using.
3. Rotating Lunges: Again with a band or ball at chest height step back into a lunge and rotate your body.
Notice all three of these uses your shoulders improving their range of motion and two of the three involve increasing range of motion and strength in the trunk.
Have a great week!
